Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Electoral education is crucial in fostering democratic participation, ensuring citizens are well-informed about their rights, responsibilities, and the electoral process. Print media has historically served as a reliable medium for disseminating information, providing a platform for political discourse, and educating voters. In Keffi Local Government, Nasarawa State, print media plays a vital role in equipping citizens with knowledge about electoral procedures, voting ethics, and the importance of civic participation (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Newspapers and other print outlets often publish electoral guides, analyses, and reports that empower voters to make informed decisions. However, challenges such as limited access to print media in rural areas, media bias, and misinformation can hinder effective electoral education (Garba & Ahmed, 2023). As the need for voter education grows, particularly in regions with high rates of political apathy, this study explores the effectiveness of print media in enhancing electoral education in Keffi.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of print media as a tool for voter education, Keffi Local Government continues to experience challenges such as voter apathy, misinformation, and inadequate understanding of electoral processes. Many residents, particularly in rural areas, lack access to reliable information on elections, which hampers their participation and decision-making. Furthermore, the absence of empirical research examining the role of print media in electoral education in Keffi creates a gap in understanding its impact. This study addresses these issues by assessing the contributions and limitations of print media in enhancing electoral education.
